Gabriel Holzner, b. 1983, is a multidisciplinary artist from southern Germany, whose bold and human artworks can be found on city walls, as painted canvases and print editions or even on a basketball court.

Biography
Gabriel Holzner was born in 1983 in a small town in Bavaria and studied communication design in Augsburg (Ger) and illustration, printmaking, and textile design in Kingston (Jam). After his graduation with honors in 2009 he moved on to work as a freelance illustrator and designer for 10 years. Since 2020 he has been focussing on his personal art practice with solo exhibitions in Munich and Vienna, print edition releases, collaborations, and residencies in Portugal and Cape Town.
Art Practice
Gabriel Holzner has developed a visual language that reflects a variety of influences: from his academic background in design, illustration and printmaking, to expressionism, pop art, graffiti, and different subcultures. Gabriel communicates his ideas mostly through abstracted figurative scenes, precisely formed, sometimes digitally arranged, and brought to life with acrylic paint or oil sticks on large-scale canvases or wood panels. Despite his boldly condensed visual language, he addresses the enduring complexity of living in the world. By bringing a sense of calm and structure to chaotic and noisy situations, he combines contradictory ideas into compelling compositions. Like many of his generation, Gabriel was shaped by the DIY (Do it yourself) ethos of hip-hop culture as well as the artists behind the film Beautiful Losers (2008). He has been defining his own spaces for his works through exhibitions, labels, collaborations, social media, public art, and printmaking in order to make his art accessible to all.

»Moving at the Speed of Observation« Exhibition / Studio Walls / Vienna / September 2024

Moving at the Speed of Observation - A painted love letter to the bicycle" was an exhibition by Gabriel Holzner at Studio Walls in Vienna.

It features four large paintings on canvas, each capturing dynamic scenes with a reduced visual language and vivid colors. At first glance, the images may seem flat, but upon closer inspection, their depth becomes evident through the many layers of acrylic paint and occasional use of modeling paste.

»Englischer Garten« Series / Commissioned Paintings / 2023

With the "Englischer Garten" series, Gabriel aimed to foster an open and engaging atmosphere within a new Munich-based office building.

The objective was to craft three large-scale paintings that capture Munich's distinctive character and inspire individuals to embrace living and working in the city.

Numerous aspects that contribute to the city's livability unfold within one of the world's largest public parks, the "Englischer Garten." This urban oasis offers the chance to swim, relax, and even surf, making it a truly unique space.

The "Englischer Garten" served as the primary muse for this commissioned painting series. Through Gabe's artistic exploration between the figurative and the abstract, he constructed a realm of human connection, nature, and activity. His depictions of the mourning willows, the Eisbach, and the renowned river surfers came to life through an earthy color palette, seamlessly connecting various facets of the space with its people and the city of Munich.
